  11. Movie Review: 'Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame'

"Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame" finds Tsui Hark, a genre wizard, in top form in this splendid, action-filled period epic. It has opulent, stylized settings of elegance, grandeur and scope, flawless special effects, and awesome martial arts combat staged by the master, Sammo Hung. Yet bravura spectacle never overwhelms either the plot or the key characters. Chang Chia-lu's intricate script bristles with wit and suspense; the film from start to finish is a terrific entertainment.

  13. Movie Review: 'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan'

In trying to give a modern twist to "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan's" bestselling story of women and friendship in 19th century China, director Wayne Wang has been tripped up by his chick-lit tendencies. He should have trusted that author Lisa See's moving portrait of two girls bound by fate, custom and circumstance (as tightly and at times as painfully as the cloth that wraps and warps their feet) would be enough. Instead, he's weighted down the big-screen version with a couple of 21st century Sex in Shanghai-styled BFFs who've had a nasty falling-out.

  15. Reel China: Will it play in Peoria and Shanghai?

Moviegoers in China enthusiastically see American films, yet the reverse is almost never true. But you'd think if there would be someone who might bridge the divide — someone whose personal background, connections and professional expertise could help bring Chinese films more into the U.S. mainstream — that person might look much like Wendi Murdoch.

  19. 'Purple Butterfly'

With Japan's aggressive designs on China simmering, Manchuria in 1928 was not the best time or place for a handsome, sensitive Japanese man to fall in love with a beautiful Chinese woman. University students with a mutual passion for art and literature — as well as for each other — Toru Nakamura's Itami and Ziyi Zhang's Cynthia are caught up in a romantic idyll. But no sooner has Itami been ordered home for military duty than Cynthia witnesses the savage assassination of her brother, a journalist with a small anti-Japanese paper, at the hands of Japanese extremists.
