  1. Larry S. Gibson's book on Thurgood Marshall examines the forces in Baltimore that shaped young judge

Forty-three years of letters, photographs, campaign buttons, itineraries and the occasional miniature flag are crammed into 2,000 fat binders lining three walls — floor to ceiling — of a storage room in the University of Maryland School of Law.

  3. Movie review: 'Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone'

Early in Laurence Fishburne's narration for the documentary "Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone," it is posited that the band could have come together only in Los Angeles, not least because when they first united in the early 1980s, the then-teenage members were mostly being bused to school from South Central to the San Fernando Valley.

PART I -- A Veterans Reunion After watching Francis Coppola's newly restored, 197-minute Apocalypse Now Redux, it is a shock to show up at a New York hotel room and see the actors who played sailors dressed in civvies. I had been prepared to conduct...

Morris Chestnut didn't pursue acting for its elusive promise of fame and glory. Though recently, a steady flow of roles in mainstream films has kept Chestnut's resume growing, the thought of becoming a household name doesn't charm him at all. Right now,...

  12. Television review: 'Hannibal' drains the mirth out of Lecter

NBC sent out five episodes of its "Silence of the Lambs" prequel "Hannibal," and although the reasons to stop watching (when in doubt, impale a woman!) too often outweighed the reasons to continue (Hugh Dancy, tracked by a dangerous dream deer), I swallowed my bile and soldiered on. And indeed, Episode 5 proved an epiphany. No spoilers here, but it costars Eddie Izzard, whose natural gift for twinkling malice threw everything into perspective.

  16. TV review: 'Hannibal' leaves a bad taste

Like a painstakingly plated dish, "Hannibal" dazzles with sumptuous visual style. Yet all those amazing ingredients add up to an experience more akin to a strip-mall buffet than fine dining.
