Mitchell is the Center's chief executive officer. Members of the Kravis Center's artistic board include dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and musicians Itzhak Perlman and Jimmy Buffet. The Kravis Center is named after prominent geologist and philanthropist Raymond F. Kravis, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who wintered in Palm Beach for more than 35 years. Kravis' friends donated more than $7 million to name the facility after him. In the1970s and 1980's arts leaders in the county were actively pursing the construction of an arts center financed solely with private funds. A number of locations were discussed before settling on the Okeechobee Road site. Currie Park on Lake Worth in West Palm Beach was initially selected, then planners switched their focus to a site adjacent to Palm Beach Community College In 1992, the $67 million center opened debt free. Eberhard Ziedler, the architect of the World Trade Center site and Liberty Place One in Philadelphia, designed the Kravis Center. A grand opening took place on Nov. 28, 1992 and featured performances by the now-defunct Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Ella Fitzgerald and others. Actor Burt Reynolds was the Master of Ceremonies. The Kravis Center underwent a significant upgrade in 2003, when it added the Cohen Pavilion. It features a grand, $31 million multipurpose facility with meeting and catering facilities, including the 10,500 square-foot Weiner Banquet Center and Gimelstob Ballroom. It has seating for more than 700. It also houses the Picower Foundation Arts Education Center with the Persson Rehearsal Hall, practice rooms, classrooms, lecture halls, theater labs, a dance studio and recording studio. The pavilion was named after Julian Cohen, a real estate developer, music lover and Kravis Center board member who died in February 2007 at the age of 82. Cohen had donated $3.2 million to the grand pavilion In 2006, The Kravis Center celebrated its 15th anniversary with performances by Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey. The anniversary also served as a tribute to businessman and arts patron Alexander W. Dreyfoos, who was a driving force in the 1970s to get a cultural center built for Palm Beach County. He was instrumental in fundraising, donating millions of dollars himself. He was chairman of the Kravis' board of directors since 1992 and resigned in 2006. The Kravis' concert hall bears the Dreyfoos name. For more information go to www.kravis.org.
