1. GOP: Groping Old Pary

Jules Witcover
WASHINGTON -- Only a few days into the new year, the Grand Old Party has a huge political hangover from the events that rang in the tidings of 2013. First came the escape from the fiscal cliff that saw its speaker of the House, John Boehner,...

4. House OKs 'fiscal cliff' deal

Past its own New Year’s deadline, a weary Congress sent President Barack Obama legislation to avoid a national ‘‘fiscal cliff’’ of middle class tax increases and spending cuts late Tuesday night in the culmination of a struggle that strained America’s divided government to the limit.

6. Defined by a Sandy sidestep

WASHINGTON -- The end-of-term reviews of John Boehner's House speakership are in, and they aren't pretty.
WASHINGTON -- The end-of-term reviews of John Boehner's House speakership are in, and they aren't pretty. "The conduct of the Republican leadership was disgraceful, it was indefensible and it was immoral." "There was a betrayal." "Disappointing...

8. The double-down president is an instigator, not a conciliator

Americans are justified in feeling numbed by the car alarm of Washington politics. Every now and then we get a reprieve from the noise. Something breaks through: a sex scandal, a gaffe, a surprise resignation. Already the words "Petraeus affair" have...

12. House GOP leadership very white and male, but why?

Official Washington went all atwitter last week when Republicans named white men to every one of the 19 committee chairmanships in the House of Representatives. More than one observer accused the party of sexism, but one watchdog group in the Capitol...

18. Weekend preview: End of the world? Santa to the rescue!

Lotta talk these days about Bolon Yokte, the Mayan god in charge of bad things, including war, conflict, the underworld and “Gangnam Style.” It is Yokte, as he is known among the wags knocking ’em back most nights at Red’s in Wilton Manors, who will be coming down to end the world on Friday. But as he will freely admit after a few VRBs (they were having conversations about Yokte in 635 A.D., so, yeah, he needs to hit the Stoli-double-Red Bull pretty hard), it’s not going to happen. Apparently, the world will continue to exist on Saturday because Yokte, great god of the 12-21-12 cataclysm, is no match for the powers of … Santa. Yokte refuses to get into specifics — he still hopes to end the world at some point — but hinted the other night that the only thing saving the planet is the unifying belief in St. Nick. “Will Ferrell doesn’t know how right he got it in ‘Elf,’ ” Yokte says. “I love Will Ferrell, by the way. I’ll really hate to end him.”

20. Democrats face problem of ages

President Barack Obama’s re-election means that, for the next four years, the face of the Democratic Party will be its vigorous 51-year-old president. Beyond Obama, however, the party has an increasingly geriatric leadership that is blocking...
