1. A quirky recap of fall's top films—in verse!

Thanksgiving was fast approaching, and the holiday blockbusters were about to start. But I still hadn't seen any of the big fall movies. How was I ever going to catch up?

11. 'The Paperboy' review: Just embarrassing

*1/2 (out of four)
*1/2 (out of four) What an odd title “The Paperboy” is for a movie with so little story. Technically there's a plot, in which Jack (Zac Efron) helps his older brother Ward (Matthew McConaughey), a reporter for the Miami Times, investigate...

13. Looper

The night I saw the screening of Looper, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was on a late night show discussing it. He had a hard time describing the plot. I’m guessing most people will, but the premise is rather simple. In the future, time travel was discovered. It was quickly banned. Yet the mob and some other bad guys keep using it. They would kill rivals, and Levitt is one of the people that cleans up the mess. It’s easier to like a protagonist that kills, when we know he’s shooting bad guys. These guys arrive with bags over their heads. Oh, and it’s 30 years in the past. He shoots and incinerates the body. He gets bars of silver for services rendered.

19. Film review: Bruce Willis goes back to the future in 'Looper'

Bruce Willis must really like projects that muck with time or at least involve confrontations between past and present: from his first major feature, “Sunset” (old guy vs. young guy, real West vs. more modern myths of the West) through “Lucky Number Slevin” with its deceitful layers of narrative, to (obviously) “Pulp Fiction.” One might even (in a stretch) include his voice-over for “Look Who's Talking,” whose central joke was derived from the clash between Willis' adult voice and the adorable moppet it represented.

23. Time-traveling 'Looper' starts strong, remains intriguing ★★★

For about an hour "Looper" really cooks. Its second half is more of a medium boil, and less fun. But watching it, I realized how few commercial entertainments hold up straight through to the end-point.
