  6. Review: 'The Croods' lacks a spark of fire

It's not a good omen for "The Croods," about a likable family of Paleolithic cave dwellers, when a joke about "the first joke" falls flat. I don't fault the actors. The character voices provided by Nicolas Cage as the Croods' cautious dad, Grug; Emma...

  8. 'The Croods': Project's evolution unkind to animated cave dwellers ★★

It's "Ice Age" with humans and less ice. "The Croods" began life nearly a decade ago as "Crood Awakening," a collaboration of DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Studios, with a script co-written by John Cleese. Then Aardman, creators of the great Wallace & Gromit and the very good "Chicken Run," fell out of the development.

  12. Winning the argument

WASHINGTON -- In his bid to be remembered as a transformational leader, President Obama is following the playbook of an ideological opposite, Margaret Thatcher. First you win the argument, she used to say, then you win the vote.

  18. Michael Murphy, Esalen's potentialist

Before the Esalen Institute, there was Michael Murphy's family's property, a choice chunk of gorgeous Big Sur, where, in 1962, Murphy (writer, seeker) and his friend and fellow human potentialist Dick Price dedicated the Murphy land to the now 50-year-old center for the pursuit of personal and social consciousness-raising. Notables like Aldous Huxley, Abraham Maslow, Joan Baez and Henry Miller contemplated themselves and the world there. Esalen's scholarly social initiatives tend to get overlooked, while the touchy-feely stuff gets the attention. Recent staff changes, the opening of a Carmel office and putting meat — albeit organic — on Esalen's menu has some grousing about its pristine alt cred. Murphy, now director of Esalen's Center for Theory and Research, is a witty, well-schooled man who stays — there's no other word for it — centered.

  22. Don't ban the bird: 10 reasons PBS is the [bleep]

Last night's presidential debate was a controversial one, as most modern political events tend to be these days. One of the biggest talkers coming out of the first debate was GOP contender Mitt Romney straight up admitting that he's going to cut PBS from the budget if he's elected to office. Like most people watching the debate under the age of 46, I was devastated. Here's the thing: I'm not here to discuss how odd it was that eliminating PBS was the first thing Romney went to when talking about things to cut from the budget. I'm not here to discuss how he then said <em>"..but I love Big Bird"</em> like when a racist person says something racist and then backtracks by saying <em>"..err, I'm not racist though. Five black people have been to my house!"</em> I don't even disagree that some of the stuff on PBS is horrible and should get cancelled. ("Barney and Friends"? "Antiques Roadshow"? I'm looking at you.) What I am here to discuss are 10 reasons Romney should reconsider:
