  7. 'Argo' producers show confidence in Affleck, even if Oscar didn't

Producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov had no idea who was going to direct "Argo." "Maybe I was going to, maybe Grant would, maybe somebody else," Clooney said. "We didn't know." But when Ben Affleck called Clooney and Heslov's Detroit hotel in early 2011 while they were filming "Ides of March," the producers had made their decision when they hung up the phone an hour later.

  9. 'Argo'

A major factor in the current film-awards season, director and star Ben Affleck's superbly staged drama is the true story of a CIA effort to get several American diplomats out of Iran during the late-1970s hostage crisis.

  11. 'Argo' writer Chris Terrio on Affleck collaboration

It's a truism that all Hollywood screenwriters learn, either the easy way or the hard way, that filmmaking is a collaborative art. Still, some personality types struggle with that.
It's a truism that all Hollywood screenwriters learn, either the easy way or the hard way, that filmmaking is a collaborative art. Still, some personality types struggle with that. Not Chris Terrio. That becomes all the more clear when, intending to...

  13. Oscar-nominated 'Argo' showing at Capitol Theatre

A movie about the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis probably doesn't sound like it would be a laugh riot — or should be — but that's just one of the many ways in which "Argo" is a glorious, gripping surprise.  Directing his third feature, Ben...

  17. Ben Affleck's mission accomplished in 'Argo' ★★★ 1/2

The propulsive hostage thriller "Argo," the third feature directed by Ben Affleck, just plain works. It's heartening to encounter a film, based on fact but happy to include all sorts of exciting fictions to amp up the suspense, whose entertainment intentions are clear. The execution is clean, sharp and rock-solid. It's as apolitical as a political crisis story set in Iran can get. But "the first rule in any deception operation is to understand who your audience is."
