  3. Where's St. George When You Need Him?

    TIMES STAFF WRITER
Dragons have the best lines in "Reign of Fire," and they don't say a word. All they have to do is breathe. Taking a year in post-production to come to life, the fire snorters in this futuristic story are admirable creatures, way more convincing than...

  5. Vertical Limit

    TIMES FILM CRITIC
Friday December 8, 2000      A man's face fills the screen. His eyes expand in terror, his mouth opens double-wide, he screams "AVALANCHE" as if the fate of nations hung on the word. You can run, you can hide, but ready or not, "Vertical Limit" is that...

  7. Movie review, 'Reign of Fire'

Even though it's the year 2025, and flying, fire-breathing dragons have reduced all the pretty English countryside to so much burnt toast, the poor old occupied British at the heart of "Reign of Fire" haven't learned many lessons from history. They...

  9. Summer Movie Preview

It has been suggested that summer has already begun at the cineplexes, with the huge opening for ``The Scorpion King." Whether The Rock has legs as well as arms will be seen. But well before Memorial Day, the traditional start of summer, the long season for big movies surely commences on Friday with the arrival of ``Spider-Man."

  11. 'Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist'

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" may be advice film producers would be wise to ignore. After sinking a reported $40 million into a Paul Schrader-directed prequel to the 1973 horror hit "The Exorcist," Morgan Creek Chief Executive James Robinson shelved that version and brought in director Renny Harlin — known as much for his duds ("Cutthroat Island," "Mindhunters") as his hits ("Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger") — to reshoot it at considerable expense. Harlin's film, titled "Exorcist: The Beginning," was released last August to poor reviews and negligible box office.

  13. 'Exorcist: The Beginning'

There's nothing like lowered expectations to prepare you for a movie.
    Times Staff Writer
There's nothing like lowered expectations to prepare you for a movie. Since Warner Bros. has consigned "Exorcist: The Beginning" to that category of films that don't rate an advance screening for critics, and since the production has had such a checkered...

When making a prequel to the scariest movie ever, you cannot simply copy the style that made it terrifying – you must understand it. And although Exorcist: The Beginning effectively recreates the dynamic Father Merrin from the original masterpiece and...

  17. Movie review: 'Exorcist: The Beginning'

    TRIBUNE MOVIE CRITIC
2 stars (out of 4) The road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but not necessarily with good sequels. "Exorcist: The Beginning" is the fourth "Exorcist" movie. And, like the last two, it's not up to the shivery original by William Peter Blatty...

    TIMES FILM CRITIC
Friday November 17, 1995      Like men of a certain age who persist in wearing tiny ponytails, "GoldenEye," the latest James Bond film, is a middle-aged entity anxious to appear trendy at all costs. A mildly successful attempt at updating a relic, its...
