1. Random observations

We went to Lollapalooza for the music, but on another note ... Friday • Ghostland Observatory's Thomas Turner looked like a comic-book supervillain in his full-length, collared cape. You know, except for the fact that it was a happy shade of sky blue....

5. How the Chicks clicked

Remember when "chicks" used to be pejorative?
Remember when "chicks" used to be pejorative? No more, not after the Dixie Chicks steamrolled the competition at the 49th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night in front of 12,000 at the Staples Center. The Chicks ran the table in the top categories,...

7. Q&A with musician Patterson Hood

This year has been a busy one for the Drive-By Truckers, who have been lauded by more than a few critics as America's "best hard rock band." In April, the rockers released A Blessing and a Curse, which continued a long trend of rave reviews that began with 2001's sprawling Southern Rock Opera. The band also toured as the opener for the Black Crowes this summer. Now they're headed to Baltimore's Virgin Festival before launching a fall tour of their own. Patterson Hood, one of the band's three musicians and songwriters, talked with Metromix about everything from Jack Daniel's to Gnarls Barkley.

10. Dylan snubbed by Grammy voters

Bob Dylan used to thrive on the role of outsider, using rejection and scorn as fuel for his poetic fires and his career ambition.

Bob Dylan used to thrive on the role of outsider, using rejection and scorn as fuel for his poetic fires and his career ambition. Well, looks like he might have some more material. In one of the biggest Grammy surprises in years, Dylan's album,...

For Mary J. Blige, "The Breakthrough" was a smash -- with an asterisk. The 35-year-old R&B singer dominated the nominations for the 49th annual Grammy Awards by accumulating eight, including nods for song and record of the year, even though...

14. Winter concert warm-ups

It's pretty chilly out there, and when it comes to exciting national acts coming through town, the concert schedule hasn't been much warmer. Never fear. There are hot shows on the horizon to keep your ears from freezing off.

16. Top albums of 2006

It's incredibly difficult to pick the best albums of 2006, but one thing's for sure: The Grammys blew it this year. Again. Save for the Dixie Chicks' stellar "Taking the Long Way," the Album of the Year nominees sound like a 101.9 WTMX playlist, not a...

18. Craft as well as confrontation

The new N.W.A retrospective "The Best of N.W.A: The Strength of Street Knowledge" raises an interesting question about when is the best time to measure an album's greatness. Is it the week the album is released or two decades later when you can see how well it holds up?
