  1. The only thing missing is Bob Dylan himself

There have been any number of Bob Dylans over the years. He's been a poet, a prophet and a revolutionary. He's been a rocker, a folk singer, even a crooner. He's been a singer of love ballads, of protest songs, of country standards.

  3. Rock songs that changed the world?

    Tribune reporter
When people talk about "important" rock songs, some obvious candidates come to mind: Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'," John Lennon's "Imagine," Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." But the musicmaking world-changers of Tom Stoppard's "Rock...

  7. Mahler, Mendelssohn and Mobtown Modern

Toward the end of his much-too-short life, Gustav Mahler completed two works filled with the sounds of leave-taking. Both <span class=&quot;i">Das Lied von der Erde</span> (<span class="i">Song of the Earth</span>) and the Symphony No. 9 suggest a composer coming to terms with his mortality, looking back on what had been and also peering into the mist for a sense of what would come after. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will perform Mahler's Ninth Symphony, conducted by music director Marin Alsop, on a program that, fittingly, will be prefaced by Leonard Bernstein's <span class="i">Opening Prayer</span>, a setting of the ancient text "May the Lord bless you and keep you."

  15. 'Dueling Harps' at REDCAT mixes strings, vocals

There's nothing like a little harp music to soothe jangled nerves. Popular at weddings, funerals and not a few brises, the age-old instrument, with its sensual curves and ethereal-sounding glissandi, not only has an aristocratic air but also seems an anachronism in today's techno-obsessed world.

  17. 3 no-good propositions

Here's how difficult it is to put something in the U.S. Constitution: You need the approval of two-thirds of Congress and three-quarters of the states. This is why the Constitution only has 27 amendments, and nearly half of those came with the original...

  19. 'Hallelujah Junction: Composing an American Life' by John Adams

JOHN ADAMS is the voice of America. His instrumental music, and particularly that for the orchestra, conveys the American experience broadly. He is generous in his interests, which include the maverick Yankee-isms of Charles Ives, the populist strains of Bernstein and Copland and the classical jazz of Ellington and Benny Goodman, as well as the more progressive styles of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Pop music -- be it the Beach Boys, Frank Zappa, electronica or grunge -- is on his radar. He has experimented with experimental music and championed Minimalism. Sibelius looms large.

  21. Humor saves 'M. Butterfly' from geopolitical changes

It's been two decades since David Henry Hwang's Tony-winning &quot;M. Butterfly" first hit Broadway. Hwang based his drama on the true-life case in which a French diplomat passed state secrets to his Chinese lover, actually a man in drag, a fact that escaped the diplomat's notice over a 20-year affair.

  23. Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger's 'End. > vacuum' to premiere at UCLA's Royce Hall

As the guitarist for hard-edged pop-rock band Incubus, Mike Einziger has headlined arenas and festivals around the world. But standing in a rehearsal room at Los Angeles Valley College in front of an assembly of trained musicians gearing up to perform his &quot;End.>vacuum," an ambitious "Realization in Nine Movements" that will have its premiere today at UCLA's Royce Hall, he seems, well, nervous.
