1. 13 bizarre beginnings to pop culture in 2013

Sometimes the predictable revolving door of lousy pop culture deserves the eye rolls it generates. Unless you totally loved the latest “Die Hard” sequel?

3. 'The Croods': Project's evolution unkind to animated cave dwellers ★★

It's "Ice Age" with humans and less ice. "The Croods" began life nearly a decade ago as "Crood Awakening," a collaboration of DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Studios, with a script co-written by John Cleese. Then Aardman, creators of the great Wallace & Gromit and the very good "Chicken Run," fell out of the development.

** (out of four)
** (out of four) Do you want to see Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds running around half-naked? Sorry, you'll have to settle for animated versions of the stars in “The Croods,” a 3-D family adventure that evidently exists to depict the invention...

Not content to just sell us books, lawn implements, baseball bats, printers, devices to read books on, bar tools, printer paper, used printers, ink cartridges, used ink cartridges and automobile floor mats — did I miss anything? — Amazon is trying to join cable, broadcast and Netflix in providing America with original, TV-like series.

9. What to expect from Seth MacFarlane's debut outing as Oscar host

A year after Billy Crystal helmed the Oscars for approximately the 40 millionth time, hosting duties fall to “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, who’s directed a grand total of one movie and had a minor role alongside Dwayne Johnson (and Crystal) in “Tooth Fairy.”

13. 'Gangster Squad' review: Soft-boiled

*1/2 (out of four)
*1/2 (out of four) This true story of morally questionable, mid-20th century L.A. cops and their efforts to rid the city of organized crime and corruption contains so much intrigue, it’s a wonder no one’s done it before. Oops, they have....

15. 'Gangster Squad' a fusillade of bullets and cliches ★★

A triumph of production design but a pretty dull kill-'em-up otherwise, the post-World War II-set "Gangster Squad" comes from the director of "Zombieland," Ruben Fleischer. It's clear Fleischer, who also made "30 Minutes or Less," hadn't worked through his "Zombieland" jones by the time he got to his latest film. I liked "Zombieland," which made a strong case for its brand of viscera and wisecracks. But "Gangster Squad" is a different sort of picture, or should be.
