1. Jackson plays challenging role of 'Ring'-bearer

NEW YORK - So universal is the interest in J.R.R. Tolkien that the bespectacled image of Peter Jackson, the 40-year-old New Zealander who co-adapted and directed three films of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy in one swoop, has now been seen by...

PART I -- A Veterans Reunion After watching Francis Coppola's newly restored, 197-minute Apocalypse Now Redux, it is a shock to show up at a New York hotel room and see the actors who played sailors dressed in civvies. I had been prepared to conduct...

5. Counter Intelligence: A little crunch with your Chianti at Tar & Roses

Any discussion of Tar & Roses must begin, as your dinner probably will, with what is probably its simplest appetizer, a concoction of popcorn tossed with brown sugar, lardons and chile, like a bowl of Cracker Jack with chewy cubes of bacon instead of peanuts. (Why can't there be chewy cubes of bacon and peanuts? That is an excellent question.) The popcorn falls solidly into a genre new in Los Angeles cooking, something we may call an elevated bar snack, a staple of the many, many gastropubs that have come to dominate casual dining here over the last couple of years.

7. Review: 'Conversations at the American Film Institute with the Great Moviemakers'

Filmmakers are natural raconteurs — they have to be — at least when talking about their films. There are the money men who must be convinced to invest, the studios they need to sign on for distribution, the actors they want to hire and the...

11. Terence Davies plunges into the 'Deep Blue Sea'

Independent filmmaker Terence Davies, 66, has made only five narrative feature films in the last 24 years. After making several short films, including his trio of autobiographical works known as "The Terence Davies Trilogy," he made his feature directorial debut with his 1988 autobiographical drama "Distant Voices, Still Lives," about a young boy growing up in a large working-class Catholic family in Liverpool in the 1940s and '50s. Among his other films are 1992's autobiographical drama "The Long Day Closes" and his 2000 adaptation of Edith Wharton's "The House of Mirth."

13. DVD review: 'David Lean Directs Noel Coward' offers interview with Ronald Neame

Noel Coward was the great renaissance man of British culture, so it's not surprising to see him listed in the opening credits of the 1942 “In Which We Serve” as producer, star, composer and director. But, not really comfortable with cinema, he hired editor David Lean — director-to-be of “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Dr. Zhivago” and others — to co-direct (with second billing, of course). Over the next few years, they collaborated on three more projects — “This Happy Breed,” “Blithe Spirit” and (most famously) “Brief Encounter” — with Lean taking over fully as director.

17. Hollywood finds romance in travel

Love is always lovelier some place other than home. Well, at least in the celluloid universe.
Love is always lovelier some place other than home. Well, at least in the celluloid universe. Traveling by boat, train or even bus can lead to romantic entanglements in the movies, as does visiting über-romantic locales such as Rome, Paris and Venice. Of...
