  1. Nate Silver: In Hollywood, 'Nobody knows anything'

Predictability and the arts-and-entertainment world have an uneasy relationship.
Predictability and the arts-and-entertainment world have an uneasy relationship. Predictability is a given — like the mouthfeel of a Big Mac — when it comes to, say, the punch lines on "Two and a Half Men" or the beats of your average...

  3. Oscars speeches: Honestly sincere, or expertly faked?

    Los Angeles looks lush.
Los Angeles looks lush. But as often noted, it is actually an arid wasteland where nothing but artifice and self-interest sprouts naturally. That's the cynical, archetypal reading. For instance, two thirds of the way into Nathanael West's cynical,...

  5. The Oscars telecast's rocky road

Last night's Oscars were like an emotional roller-coaster at a terrible amusement park--beginning wth Seth MacFarlane's as-bad-as-feared monologue, the show rarely rose above painful and hit few peaks. Allow us to relive some of the night's best and worst moments, not necessarily in that order.

  9. 'Django Unchained' is Tarantino, undisciplined ★★

In "Django Unchained," which has its moments of devilish glee in and among dubious wallows in numbing slaughter, writer-director-trash compactor Quentin Tarantino delivers a mashup of several hundred of his favorite movies, all hanging, like barnacles, onto a story of a freed slave (Jamie Foxx) and his bounty-hunter savior (Christoph Waltz) out to rescue Django's wife (Kerry Washington) from a venal plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). The plantation's "house slave" (Samuel L. Jackson) has no divided loyalties in the eventual standoff.

  11. Rain makes 'Umbrellas of Cherbourg' a Cannes no-brainer

It’s tempting here, at the bountiful Cannes Film Festival, to bypass the competition titles, if only for a couple of hours, and avail yourself of something you already know you adore.

  15. RedEye's 2013 Oscar predictions

For context about predictions of major entertainment events, Duff Goldman from “Ace of Cakes” correctly predicted the result of this year’s Super Bowl. NFL experts did not.

  17. Happy face/sad face reaction: 2013 Oscar nominations

As always, this morning’s Oscar nominations created a roller coaster of emotion. Shock! Relief! Fury! I should not get so worked up about this.

  21. Predictions: Golden Globes 2013--movies

No matter who wins or loses Sunday, the 2013 Golden Globes ceremony obviously will be awesome because Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler are hosting. Really: That should be enough to make even the most awards show-averse movie/TV fans tune in.
