  4. They've got the 'Project Runway' blues

On a Saturday afternoon at Mood Designer Fabrics, spirits are hardly as light as the L.A. store's yellow silk and baby blue taffeta when talk turns to " Project Runway," which was supposed to have started its sixth season Jan. 20. It feels more like black muslin here -- dark and unyielding.

  6. Documentary zooms in on 'Project Runway's' Jay McCarroll

Four years ago, Jay McCarroll reigned as king of the TV catwalk as " Project Runway's" very first winner. His serrated wit and Capote-like candor made him an appealing hyphenate: an entertainer-fashion designer.

  8. At the Emmys, reality's the star

PEOPLE are the reason we watch what we watch. Although the other arts and sciences the Emmys honor, from writing to wardrobe, all determine how we see the people of TV, ultimately, the medium is a matter of human observing human.

  13. Pregnancy chic

I USED to look forward to getting knocked up. To me, pregnancy sounded like a mini-retirement. You could walk around in slippers with food stains down your front and groan when you stood up too fast. Greasy hair? Blame those bumptious hormones. Thunderous belches? Ditto. Sure, I have always thought being a mom would be a supreme blessing and all that jazz. But the freedom to act like a frat boy for a few months? Priceless.

  15. Fashion forward

Davy Yang, 21, peers at the models sashaying down the Otis College runway in his carefully wrought designs -- an arresting yellow swimsuit that swirls on the hipbone with fabric trailing down the back, and a blue jumpsuit with an eye-catching rust-colored scarf -- garments that took two full semesters of sketching, stitching and adjusting to perfect.

  17. Lauren Conrad, the Emmys' trophy designer

MAYBE IT'S the fusty name: Emmy. Sounds a bit like that teetotalling aunt who's always bragging about her latest canasta score. Last year, the Emmy Awards drew just 13.1 million viewers, down from 16.2 million the year before. (Even the Country Music Awards beat it.) But this year, the producers of the 60th -- at least it's the new 50! -- annual show are intent on luring a dewier set.
