7. 'Footloose' with more flair

When “Footloose” originally came out in 1984, it was a dance movie with a flimsy plot about a town that bans public dancing and the young rebels that see a cause to resist. But its catchy soundtrack rode a nascent MTV tidal wave and spawned six Top 40 songs, turning the film into a huge sleeper hit and its lead Kevin Bacon into a star.

A little over a month after the October 14 release of Footloose, consensus has settled in: Craig Brewer’s remake doesn’t cut it. What little praise has been allocated to the film has been faint, and most of it directed to Miles Teller’s performance in the role Chris Penn originated in 1984. Otherwise, the acting of the other two leads, the unimpressive dancing, and especially that the movie is “unnecessary” have been singled out as disappointments. I would like to take critics to task on this final point.

Culture Monster
By one measure, director Craig Brewer’s 2011 restraint and careful focus in the retelling of “Footloose” appear a success for Paramount, and a boon for the propulsion of American dance. With heralded performances by its young leads and...
