Billy Crudup

Billy Crudup confirmed his interest in acting and Broadway early on, earning an MFA from Tisch School of the Arts.

His first big-screen role was in the indie film "Grind," where he played 20-year-old Eddie Dolan, who was just released after an 18-month stretch in prison. In 2000, the actor hit big with audiences and critics in the Cameron Crowe film "Almost Famous," where he got to use his dramatic and comedic abilities in the role of rocker Russell Hammond.

  5. Depp unleashes inner outlaw in 'Public Enemies'

<img src="http://www.newsday.com/images/icons/3halfstar.gif"> Public Enemies provides a welcome shock to the system. This tough-minded, visually electric movie about Great Depression bank robber John Dillinger ( Johnny Depp) takes audiences into the center of the action in its opening minutes. It keeps them there as it expands into a bristling chronicle of a country in flux. Without ever telling viewers what to think or how to feel, it raises more questions about the corruption of crime and crime fighting than any expose or thesis. And if it sometimes registers too coolly, by the end it rouses more bruised feelings than any four-hankie weepie.

  9. 'Public Enemies'

It was the movies that killed John Dillinger -- Gangster No. 1 until he was gunned down outside a Chicago theater after taking in the pictures one hot night in 1934 -- and it was the movies that brought him back to life. More than once. But this time it's different. This time Michael Mann is in charge.

  23. Johnny Depp turns gangster in 'Public Enemies'

If it seems appropriate that "Public Enemies," director Michael Mann's film starring Johnny Depp as Depression-era bank robber and all-around gangster John Dillinger, is opening Wednesday in the midst of the greatest economic meltdown in 70 years, that's because the 1930s were the golden age of the gangster film.
