Highlights
Billy Crudup

Billy Crudup confirmed his interest in acting and Broadway early on, earning an MFA from Tisch School of the Arts.

  1. Depp unleashes inner outlaw in 'Public Enemies'

<img src="http://www.baltimoresun.com/media/photo/2009-07/48258211.jpg"> Public Enemies provides a welcome shock to the system. This tough-minded, visually electric movie about Great Depression bank robber John Dillinger ( Johnny Depp) takes audiences into the center of the action in its opening minutes. It keeps them there as it expands into a bristling chronicle of a country in flux. Without ever telling viewers what to think or how to feel, it raises more questions about the corruption of crime and crime fighting than any expose or thesis. And if it sometimes registers too coolly, by the end it rouses more bruised feelings than any four-hankie weepie.

  10. Michael Mann and Johnny Depp make art of Dillinger

It was the movies that killed John Dillinger -- Gangster No. 1 until he was gunned down outside a Chicago theater after taking in the pictures one hot night in 1934 -- and it was the movies that brought him back to life. More than once. But this time it's different. This time Michael Mann is in charge.

  13. In 'Public Enemies,' Johnny Depp, Christian Bale Show Their Star Power

Anyone doubting the role charisma plays in the movies need look no further than "Public Enemies," an old-fashioned gangster picture built on simple star power. Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis make this retelling of an oft-told tale from "the Golden Age of Bank Robbery" riveting, rousing entertainment.

  17. 'Watchmen' is no heroic effort

The ultimate question raised by the movie version of the celebrated graphic novel Watchmen may not be "Who watches the Watchmen?" but "Who will check their watches during Watchmen?" Ticking in at two hours and 43 minutes, this slavish exercise in revisionist comic-book lore takes more than an hour to get started, and then never gets its scale or proportion right.
