Laurel High's Phillip Stokes is a rarity among tennis players in that he more confidence — and power — with his backhand than with his forehand.
"You don't see that a lot," said Karl Holovach, the ninth-year coach for the Spartans.
But the junior has another label this spring: No. 1 singles player for the Laurel boys. He has big shoes to fill as the Spartans have had to replace twin brothers Tre'vonne and former No. 1 singles Roderick Peyton, now freshmen with Division I Coppin State University in Baltimore.
