Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway went from being a Disney princess to an Oscar-nominated actress. She got her start playing the clumsy girl with royalty in her blood in Disney's "Princess Diaries" films. Hathaway started to break from the princess mold with "Brokeback Mountain." Her fame continued with lead roles in the blockbusters "The Devil Wears Prada" opposite Meryl Streep and "Get Smart" opposite Steve Carell. In 2009, she was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her turn as a recovering drug addict in "Rachel Getting Married." In 2010, she'll be returning to her family-friendly roots with her role as the White Queen in "Alice in Wonderland." Show more »

7. Sequestration? Not Scary. Try Fiscal Death Match

The Hartford Courant

9. Schmich: There's no way to screen out the screens

I woke up the other morning wondering how I spent my time in the days before the Internet.
I woke up the other morning wondering how I spent my time in the days before the Internet. In the early quiet, I lay there trying to remember. What exactly did I do first thing in the morning before all those screens cried for my attention? What did I...

11. Oscars speeches: Honestly sincere, or expertly faked?

Los Angeles looks lush.
Los Angeles looks lush. But as often noted, it is actually an arid wasteland where nothing but artifice and self-interest sprouts naturally. That's the cynical, archetypal reading. For instance, two thirds of the way into Nathanael West's cynical,...

The Hartford Courant
I attended the Academy Awards this year, as I usually do. For the record I was wearing a gray T-shirt and a pair of plaid flannel pajama bottoms from the Ocean State Job Lot collection. I looked fabulous, at least that's what the person doing the...

15. The Oscars telecast's rocky road

Last night's Oscars were like an emotional roller-coaster at a terrible amusement park--beginning wth Seth MacFarlane's as-bad-as-feared monologue, the show rarely rose above painful and hit few peaks. Allow us to relive some of the night's best and worst moments, not necessarily in that order.

23. What does hate-watching mean?

Anne Hathaway — insufferable, grating, insistently chipper, with those big stupid puppy-dog eyes and that dumb pixie hair, shocked, shocked, at the fortune and appreciation bestowed on her talented head, so rehearsed in her faux-humility, so rehearsed in her faux-uncertainty (“Thank you very much for this lovely blunt object that I will forevermore use as a weapon against self-doubt,” she barfed at the Golden Globes, after receiving an award she was assured of winning) — is wonderful.
