1. Reporter: The best story I would ever write

"How much presidential political trivia do you know?" a Sun reporter asked me shortly after I joined The Evening Sun in 1989.
"How much presidential political trivia do you know?" a Sun reporter asked me shortly after I joined The Evening Sun in 1989. "Not much," I admitted cheerfully. I was a second-generation hire at The Baltimore Sun, a fact I had managed to conceal until...

"When is everything going to go back to normal?" - Roger Sterling Raise your hand if you were ready for Fat Betty? Or Don's new secretary being named Dawn? Or (what I'm guessing) is the first-ever Rolling Stones-potential-bean-commercial idea. Yeah,...

5. Opening the books on holiday gifts for readers

In these tough economic times, books offer a great return on a gift-giver's investment. Relatively inexpensive, they provide hours of enjoyment for the recipient — if you make the right choice. Never fear: the Book Bag is here to help. Lovers of...

9. Happy scandalous anniversary to Allen Ginsberg's 'Howl'

On this date, March 25, in 1957, Allen Ginsberg helped make literary history. That's because 520 copies of his poem "Howl" were seized by U.S. Customs agents on charges of obscenity. Ginsberg and his publisher, City Lights, would fight those charges -- and win.

11. Kerouac opus 'On the Road' hits just enough beats ★★★

An eternal fountain of adolescence, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" went through many permutations between its point of origin, 1948, and its point of notorious, divisive publication, 1957. The best description of it came from Kerouac himself, in a journal entry written after his first cross-country road trip in 1948. The book he had in mind, he said, was about "two guys hitchhiking to California in search of something they don't really find, and losing themselves on the road, and coming all the way back hopeful of something else." There's a simple beauty to that. The question is: How do you film an extended yearning?

15. L.A. architecture takes the lead in Getty's new PST project

Much of the time Los Angeles can feel like a huge, messy jigsaw puzzle, with pieces left out — a city that evolved by accident. Parts of it don't work, parts of it seem newly broken, parts are truly luminous — but hidden — and they all seem to have nothing to do with each other.
