Formerly Bethune-Cookman College, or B-CC, the historically black college in Daytona Beach changed its name to Bethune-Cookman University in 2007 after adding a graduate program. School officials said the name change reflected the school's broader educational offerings.

Born in 1875 to parents who were former slaves, she became a national political figure and civil rights pioneer. Mary McLeod Bethune started the school in 1904 with five little girls and virtually no money. Born in 1875 to parents who were former slaves, she became a national political figure and civil rights pioneer. She was an adviser to President Franklin Roosevelt, was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the United Nations and helped integrate the American Red Cross. She also served as president of the National Association of Colored Women before her death in 1955.
The school she founded with a dollar and a half was originally known as the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls. It became a high school and then a junior college before the state approved it as a four-year college in 1941. The United Methodist-affiliated university now has 3,000 students.
University President Trudie Kibbe Reed was inaugurated as Bethune-Cookman's fifth president in January 2005, taking over for Oswald Perry Bronson Sr., who led the school for 29 years. For many years, the school distanced itself from Daytona Beach's Black College Reunion, an annual gathering started by students from Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M University to celebrate the football rivalry between the schools. In recent years, Bethune-Cookman officials have become more active in organizing events for BCR to help overcome the event's troubled and sometimes violent history.
Bethune-Cookman and FAMU now celebrate their rivalry at the Florida Classic football game, which draws more than 70,000 to the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. The B-CU Wildcats and the FAMU Rattlers have clashed at the neutral site since 1997. For many, the football game takes a back seat to the halftime show, which features performances by the two schools' world-renown marching bands. Bethune-Cookman's Marching Wildcats were featured in the movie Drumline, a look at black college "show bands" known for their funky drumbeats, high-stepping dance moves and acrobatics.
