  1. Columbia music historian compiles Vietnam War songs

Nearly 40 years ago, a haunting photograph of a naked Vietnamese girl running in anguish after being severely burned in a napalm bomb attack on her village became an iconic image of the Vietnam War.

  7. Connecting to careers

My two teenage granddaughters are high school seniors. They both plan to take next year off before entering college while they try to figure out how to connect to adult roles. How will they fit in the wider community? What are the careers where they will earn their livelihoods? While they struggle, they are not without resources: a good and successful public high school education, parents and family members who are professionals and connected to networks, extracurricular experiences in theater or school government, and part-time jobs.

  9. The promise of technology in the classroom

It's getting harder for a public school teacher to reach excellence. By "excellence," I mean being responsible for helping each student significantly develop his or her knowledge or learning capacity. This increased difficulty is not the fault of teachers. Rather, teaching now requires mastering two seemingly opposite responsibilities: developing the best and the brightest to regain America's educational standing in the world, while ensuring that each student learns the basic competencies assessed by state and federal testing — and applying them to classes increasingly diverse in a host of educational factors.

  13. Punishment of last resort

Students who are disruptive, rude or violent are every teacher's worst nightmare and every kid's worst example of how to behave. Just a few bad actors can derail an entire classroom. No wonder school officials' natural impulse is to kick them out. But...

  15. Baltimore County suspension rate reveals the problem of 'mainstreaming' disturbed students

Liz Bowie's "High suspension rate in Balto. Co." (Dec. 26) raises important issues. Cleary 10,000 Baltimore County school students suspended in one year (about 10 percent and a much higher rate than most of Maryland) sounds terrible. Furthermore, the data...

  17. Md. fails to keep its promise to HBCUs

Maryland is attempting to renege on its obligation to provide sufficient funding to make its historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) comparable and competitive with other public universities in Maryland in terms of mission, academic program offerings, library services, information technology infrastructure, and other facets of their operations. For five years, the state has vigorously opposed a lawsuit by HBCU students and alumni that seeks to dismantle remnants of the formerly segregated higher education system. The case, the Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Maryland Higher Education v. Maryland's Higher Education Commission, is the first of its kind in the state and the first of its kind in the nation to go to trial in some 16 years.
