1. Former Lake Clifton forward Juwan Newman to Central Connecticut State

When Juwan Newman rode the bench on an undefeated Lake Clifton team that featured three high-major players, he didn’t complain. When the 6-foot-8, 215-pound power forward missed NCAA qualifying standards coming out of high school and prep school, he didn’t stop working to improve his academics. And when the East Baltimore native moved across the country to attend junior colleges in New Mexico and Idaho, he didn’t once think about retreating back home.

  3. Baltimore charter school advocate among new crop of Casey Foundation fellows

Unimpressed with the elementary school in her Baltimore neighborhood, Bobbi Macdonald set out to create her own. She founded the City Neighborhoods Foundation in 2003, the year her oldest daughter started kindergarten and the state of Maryland began allowing charter schools.

  5. Now's the time to raise the bar for Baltimore schools

As the founder of KIPP Baltimore, which operates two high-performing public charter schools in the city, I am heartened and encouraged by our progress over the past six years under schools CEO Andrés Alonso. As I move to a new role as executive director of MarylandCAN — the Maryland Campaign for Achievement Now — I am hopeful that many of the policies and approaches that have driven this progress will be replicated in other Maryland school systems.

  7. School reform doesn't work

In their commentary ("Six steps for post-Alonso school reform," May 14), Thomas Wilcox, Diane Bell-McKoy and Laura Gamble use many lofty and idealistic sounding words to promote their vision. However, it bears noting that education "reformers" are well-versed in using terms that have an appeal, yet bear little substance. It's part of the script to sell the public on a model for education that actually requires a deeper analysis and understanding. Words like "choice" and "accountability" have done for the corporate-model of education reform what buzz words like "whole grain" and "real fruit juice" have done for the food processing industry. Thus, commentaries such as this warrant a translation. My translation as follows is not grounded in empty rhetoric or phrases, but instead relies on facts and examples from other urban areas, to predict what such school, reform may indeed come to look like in Baltimore. The question will then remain: are we willing to buy this model? Or should we read the label more carefully?

  9. Diversity and choice key for city schools

We share the editorial view that outgoing Baltimore City Schools CEO Andrés Alonso created a strong platform to sustain ongoing improvement in our schools ("School reform 2.0," May 12). But the editorial's call for more standardization around the system is off the mark.

  11. Schools for everyone

Baltimore City school officials say the nearly $1.2 billion budget the system unveiled last week will fund a raft of new academic endeavors, among them a new team to upgrade instruction in the sciences to meet the higher standards of the new national "core" curriculum and additional programs for academically gifted students. This is all to the good if it helps the city attract and retain more young families with children for whom strong public schools are often the most important factor in choosing where to live. But it's not a sufficient step in a system that needs to raise the quality of classroom instruction across the board.

  15. 10-year-old brings comforts of home to fire victims

When the Hontz family lost their Hanover home to a fire last summer, it wasn't long before they started missing the basic necessities. First, it was a toothbrush. Then, a Band-Aid. But for Lauren Hontz, who was just 9 years old at the time, all she really wanted was a blanket to call her own.

  17. News that city's population has grown isn't a surprise to residents

As I walk around Baltimore, it has become apparent that the city is on an upward swing. I see more people out on the streets and living in places that once seemed underused or headed for trouble. Streets and places I once considered dangerous are not scaring people away.

  21. Laurel products prepare for March Madness [Commentary]

Jonathan Arledge is a smooth 6-foot-9 basketball player with a nice outside shooting touch for a big man, and the ability to also make nice moves near the basket. With little body fat, the Laurel Boys and Girls Club product and former Meade High School student is a solid Division I player at a mid-major level.
