The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, also known as UMBC, is a mid-sized public research university that was founded in 1966. UMBC is located on 500 acres in Catonsville, Md. - about 20 minutes away from Baltimore - and is a separate campus from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. The school is one of 11 University System of Maryland schools, and it is an "honors university" that offers an Honors College program and many research opportunities. The school is one of 11 University System of Maryland schools, and it is an "honors university" that offers an Honors College program and many research opportunities. UMBC offers 43 majors, 41 minors and 20 certificate programs.

The university also offers 36 master's degree programs, 24 doctoral degree programs and 17 graduate certificate programs. Notable UMBC landmarks include the Joseph Beuys Sculpture Park; Pig Pen Pond, which is part of the campus and used as a teaching aid; the Commons campus center; and the Retriever Activities Center. The school's mascot is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and the school has 19 Division I sports.

Student organizations include the Retriever Weekly newspaper, Bartleby literary magazine, WMBC radio station, Greek organizations, cultural associations, academic and honor societies, sports clubs, activist organizations, graduate student groups and service clubs. Famous UMBC alumni include CNN anchor Tony Harris, Charm City Cakes owner Duff Goldman and actress Kathleen Turner.
