Founded by Baptists in 1890, along with oil baron John D. Rockefeller, the University of Chicago occupies 211 acres in the Hyde Park neighborhood south of downtown Chicago. It has 4,400 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate, professional and other students. Its athletic teams are called the Maroons. Although the university was founded by Baptists, it was nondenominational from the start and enrolled women and minorities at a time when many universities did not.
