15. Honoring Abe Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation at the Fairfield Museum and History Center

Abraham Lincoln is among the most beloved Americans of all time, if not the most beloved. His legendary status make him seem like a character from a book, but he was a real dude. And the Fairfield Museum and History Center has proof: Two documents signed by honest Abe himself. One is a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation and the other a copy of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery. They're both on display at a new exhibit, Promise of Freedom: The Emancipation Proclamation, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the official signing of the document. On a historical scale, this wasn't really that long ago. There's a kickoff gala on Saturday afternoon, which Governor Malloy is slated to attend, that will feature a reading of the Proclamation and entertainment from the University of Bridgeport Chamber Singers.

  21. Late Night Breakfast at Frankie's Diner in Bridgeport

Sometimes we need to be reminded of the restaurants that have seemingly always been there, that quietly provide consistantly great food while the rest of the world churns wildly around us. I recently rediscovered Frankie's Diner, a spot just half a mile from my childhood home in Bridgeport. On a recent visit, at 1 a.m., I ordered two eggs over easy, bacon, home fries and wheat toast, with a side of green goddess dressing for dipping, just as I did years ago. And the flavors instantly brought me right back to being a kid in 1980s Bridgeport. Frankie's provided what were probably the first home fries I ever ate, setting the bar for all home fries to come after — and they still hold up. For $6.75, you'll hardly find a better deal. This is diner food at its best, and it's available 24 hours a day. Fun little known fact: University of Bridgeport and Housatonic students get 10% off their orders if they show their student IDs.
