UM won't lack for quality students if it doesn't merge with UMB

Commentator Patrick Ronk has chosen the wrong example to support his position on the proposed merger of UMB and UMCP ("Improving UMD improves university system," March 25).

The flagship institution of the University of California (UC Berkeley) has no medical school. The nearest such school is located across San Francisco Bay and is part of UCSF, which has its own administration, leadership and governance.

Nevertheless, UC Berkeley does not lack quality students; indeed, I find the suggestion that a UMB-UMCP merger is necessary to improve the quality of UMCP students...
