Highlights
The school was founded in 1866 as the Chicago Academy of Design by a collective of studio artists. Its collecting arm was founded in 1872, and The Art Institute of Chicago was officially born in 1882. The Art Institute moved to its location on South Michigan Avenue after the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. The total enrollment is about 2,500, nearly 600 of whom are graduate students. It offers a range of art, architecture and writing-related degrees.
