In her first marathon, Elisabeth Tauber did not expect to win, nor to finish under 3:15, nor to carry a football across the finish line. Her performance Sunday in the Marshall University Marathon, however, defied her expectations.
Tauber, 22, of Bel Air, won the women's 26.2-mile race easily, leading the second-place woman by 25 minutes. Taking a handoff as she entered Marshall's football stadium, she crossed the finish line in 3:00:57, smiling and cradling a football.
Footballs were handed to most of the 395 marathon finishers in remembrance of the Marshall football team that perished in a 1970 air crash. Tauber is a graduate student at Marshall.
