NCAA to pay $1.2 million to settle lawsuit in death of Frostburg football player

Lawyers are announcing a $1.2 million settlement with the NCAA and other defendants in a wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the 2011 death of a Frostburg State University football player.

Attorney Kenneth McClain said in a statement Monday that the deal with the parents of Derek Sheely is a landmark settlement that puts the NCAA and other football stakeholders on notice of their obligation to protect the health and safety of athletes.

The senior fullback from Germantown died from a head injury he suffered in practice. The school, the NCAA and the maker and retailer of the helmet Sheely wore had denied allegations of negligence.
