The student-run newspaper at Eastern Illinois University is celebrating its 100th birthday with a gathering for former staff members Saturday.
The Daily Eastern News first published on Nov. 5, 1915. The first issue was funded by students who thought it would be a good way to support the school's football team.
The newspaper went from a weekly to a daily in 1973. Former newspaper adviser David Reed tells the Journal Gazette (http://bit.ly/1MgIzRq) that the popularity of the student newspaper proved there was interest in the field of journalism. The paper helped inspire the creation of a journalism degree at Eastern.
