  • Nicholas Harris earns Eagle Scout award

On Sunday, Oct. 6, Nicholas Harris was awarded the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America, the Eagle Scout. A special Court of Honor ceremony was held at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Hickory to recognize his outstanding accomplishment and efforts. Harris started his scouting years in the first grade as a member of Pack 830. As a Cub Scout he earned his Arrow of Light, Cub Scout's highest award as well as the Parvuli Dei religious medal. Harris began his Boy Scout years in 2006 as a member of Troop 238 and has held the leadership roles of assistant patrol leader, patrol leader and instructor. To attain the rank of Eagle, scouts are required to earn at least 21 merit badges, demonstrate Scout Spirit through the Boy Scout Oath and Law, service and leadership. This includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads and manages. Harris earned a total of 27 badges and completed his Eagle project at his elementary school, Prospect Mill. He and a team of 25 volunteers cleared a 200-by-10-foot trail that now provides easy and safe access to the outdoor classroom for the students. Additionally, Harris and his team constructed three 6-foot picnic tables in an open area below the classroom where students can enjoy their lunches. One of Harris's fondest memories was the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base trip to the Florida Keys. This experience and his love of the ocean and outdoors has been a deciding factor in pursuing the field of marine biology as his course of study. Harris is a graduate of C. Milton Wright High School and is the son of Chris and Dianne Harris. He attends Harford Community College and plans to study in the marine science program at Coastal Carolina University.
