UConn says state cuts would lead to closing departments

The governor's proposed $40 million cut in anticipated state aid to the University of Connecticut would lead to staff cuts, unpaid furloughs and closure of some departments and degree programs, the school's president warned Tuesday. But Susan Herbst said she will not ask the university's Board of Trustees for new tuition or fee increases, beyond those that were approved in 2011. Herbst testified before the legislative Appropriation Committee, which is considering Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's two-year, nearly $40 billion tax-and-spending proposal.
