1. NSA surveillance: What's one more Big Brother?

In principle, the National Security Agency's vast data collection operation is troubling, but in the age of Google and Facebook, it feels like having just one more Big Brother in a growing family of Big Brothers.

3. Report on government spying should be a wake up call

I was somewhat disturbed by reports the National Security Agency has been monitoring all phone calls on the Verizon system for years ("Surveillance state," June 7). But like most Americans I accepted it as my government protecting the country against terrorists.

11. Time to dial up some healthy skepticism

The U.S. government is trying "to create a database of every [phone] call ever made."
The U.S. government is trying "to create a database of every [phone] call ever made." That's how one informed person described the National Security Agency's effort to USA Today. That newspaper also confirmed that not only is the government collecting...

13. The case against NSA's phone record surveillance

The American Civil Liberties Union's lawsuit against the National Security Agency, seeking an end to the collection of data about nearly every phone call made by Americans, provides an almost unprecedented opportunity for the public to challenge the legality of the surveillance being conducted in its name. Although the government maintains that the program is authorized by the Patriot Act, and a special court designed to handle such matters has agreed, it has not been subject to anything like the kind of review we typically expect of the government's actions. The government's acknowledgment of its existence directly contradicts officials' earlier statements about the nature of NSA surveillance, and the author of the Patriot Act says it goes beyond the kinds of activities he intended the law to authorize. The Patriot Act is too broad as it is, and any stretching of it — which this program clearly is — demands a public airing as to its constitutionality.

15. Surveillance leaks show Obama's hypocrisy

The revelation that the federal government has spied on millions of supposedly private phone and Internet communications makes President Barack Obama's headache over the IRS targeting of conservative groups seeking tax exemptions seem like a passing migraine.

17. Big Brother NSA

For years, I've been super cautious about my phone calls. I avoid e-mail as much as possible and eschew Facebook and social media. I've nothing to hide, but the thought of the National Security Agency (among others) spying on my day-to-day communications is just sickening ("NSA collects Verizon records of U.S. callers," June 6). This latest news is horrific. Privacy is dead. We have sacrificed our freedom for so-called "security."

19. Obama's surveillance state

A report late Wednesday that a top-secret court authorized the National Security Agency to collect the telephone records of millions of Verizon customers should raise serious concerns about the scope of the Obama administration's domestic surveillance program and the threat it poses to citizens' privacy. The fact that the government can secretly order communications firms to turn over massive amounts of potentially sensitive information about customers without their knowledge calls into question the administration's commitment to transparency and the ability of the special court charged with overseeing such requests to protect citizens' rights.

21. Privacy advocates outraged, but lawmakers defend collection of phone records

Privacy advocates expressed outrage Thursday over revelations that the National Security Agency has been collecting telephone records of virtually every phone call made in the United States for seven years, but the Obama administration and a bipartisan group of lawmakers defended the program as both legal and necessary.
