1. Westwoods: A Daunting But Highly Rewarding Experience Along The Shoreline

Exploring Westwoods in a morning or afternoon is a daunting task.
The Hartford Courant
Exploring Westwoods in a morning or afternoon is a daunting task. The 1,200-acre preserve to the west of historic Guilford center has 39 miles of trails. And that's not even the time-consuming part. Once you enter this magical natural world jammed...

3. History Of Haley Farm State Park In Groton Stretches Back to 1648

Back in 1961, a developer wanted to turn an ancient shoreline farm into a housing development with 425 duplex units for the Coast Guard, which was stationed at Avery Point in Groton. Residents banded together, fought the proposal and raised money to save a farm.

7. Quentin Kopp, no longer on board this bullet train

There's a short piece of Bay Area freeway, Interstate 380, named for Quentin Kopp, which is ironic considering that he's beaten the drum for public transit — specifically bullet trains — for years. But then again, he's always been a contrarian, as a Superior Court judge, a San Francisco supervisor and a state senator. He also headed the California High-Speed Rail Authority. The man nicknamed the "Great Dissenter" is dissenting now over the course of his beloved bullet train, created on paper in 2008 with a bond measure, Proposition 1A. Its prospects have been slowed considerably by lawsuits, the latest from the state itself, a preemptive bring-it-on legal action called High-Speed Rail Authority vs. All Persons Interested. Kopp is among the very interested, and the not very happy.

— We're running late this weekday afternoon and the road is a bit bumpy en route to Madison, Wis.
— We're running late this weekday afternoon and the road is a bit bumpy en route to Madison, Wis. For Megabus, the still-growing discount intercity bus line, however, the ride has been faster and smoother than anyone would have guessed when it made...

11. Watching the big game with my dad, despite Amtrak

Just outside of Battle Creek, Mich., the story stopped getting better.
Just outside of Battle Creek, Mich., the story stopped getting better. The story was of my spur-of-the-moment decision to hop a train to Ann Arbor on Monday afternoon so I could watch the University of Michigan play in the NCAA men's basketball...

13. After Ravens' win, is anything possible?

After hearing where I'm from, many strangers have looked at me as if I'd said I was recently cured of leprosy. Their expressions speak volumes: "How he manages to smile, I will never know. I'm glad he's OK, but, God, I hope he's not contagious."

15. Johnston Square appears to be turning the corner

The banner at Greenmount Avenue and Preston Street proclaims the Lillian Jones Apartments are coming. For the past year, I've watched this building take shape in a neighborhood that needed all the help it could get. Come spring, new tenants will begin moving into these 74 units of affordable housing.

17. The Amtrak fantasy

WASHINGTON -- There is something about Amtrak -- perhaps the romance of railroads or the promise of relieving traffic congestion and economizing on oil and greenhouse gas emissions -- that causes otherwise sensible people to lose contact with reality. The reality is that Amtrak is a waste of taxpayers' money and has been since its creation in 1970. It doesn't significantly reduce congestion, fuel use or greenhouse gases. Amtrak is too small to have any appreciable effect in any of these areas. Yet, Amtrak retains an aura of respectability with much of the public and many "experts," who believe it should survive and, perhaps, expand.

Jonah Goldberg
Dear Socially Liberal Fiscal Conservative Friend, That's pretty toothy, so I'm going to call you Bob. But whatever specific name you go by, Bob, you know who you are. You're the sort of person who says to his conservative friends or co-workers something...
