1. Rules for frequent fliers are changing

Frequent-flier miles have taken me around the world. African safaris, a snorkeling trip on the Great Barrier Reef, a Baltic Sea cruise and treks in the Himalayas have all been possible thanks to airfare paid with miles.

  9. In-flight Internet update

In-flight Internet presents an interesting paradox: When it's available, only about 5 percent to 10 percent of travelers actually use it, but it's becoming a virtual necessity for the world's airlines. Acceptance by U.S. domestic lines varies substantially, and it's even lower overseas, but the world's airlines are all moving ahead with large-scale installations.

  13. Alzheimer's takes toll on caregivers

Much of the care for Alzheimer's patients, particularly in its early stages, is undertaken by family members. The rising numbers of those with the disease — one in three seniors die with Alzheimer's or another dementia — is putting a steadily increasing financial and emotional burden on families. The annual report of the Alzheimer's Association, released Tuesday, estimated the overall cost of care at $200 billion in 2012, and suggested that it would rise to $203 billion this year.

More than 3,000 flights have been canceled and train service has been suspended Friday as a large winter storm started to bear down on a swath of the Northeast from New Jersey to Maine. The winter storm is predicted to bring high winds, plenty of snow -- 2 to 3 feet predicted for Boston and New York City -- and a big headache for travelers.

  17. Seniors on the Go: Airlines schlep your bags — for a price

United Airlines is emulating rival American in featuring a baggage-delivery service at your arrival airport. Although you have to get your bags to the departure airport and check them by yourself, when you arrive at your destination airport, you hand your bags over to a delivery representative and go past the baggage claim to your hotel, office, or other local destination, where a local service delivers your bag.

  21. Ask Airfarewatchdog.com: Refunds when the price drops

Q: A few years ago, I used Yapta, which tracks airfares and alerts you when the price of your flight has gone down after purchase so that you can apply for a "fare drop" flight credit on a future flight. It worked very well. But like many things I forgot about it. Anyway I found it again this morning and downloaded the application to my iPad and iPhone and tried to put my first flight in. I got as far as flight number when it crashed and I started over again … three times. Since the app hasn't been updated since 2011 I wonder if it still works? Or if you have any suggestions for other sites that do the same thing. It would be great if such a service existed for flights, car and hotel rooms!
