1. Md. passes thoroughbred breeder incentive program amid bickering

The Maryland Racing Commission passed a revised incentive program Tuesday meant to persuade thoroughbred breeders to operate in the state and owners of those horses to run on its tracks, but might have shattered the harmony achieved among the sports' stakeholders in recent months.

  3. Organizers declare the 138th Preakness a success

The numbers alone say the 138th Preakness was a huge success. A crowd of 117,203, the fourth largest in Preakness history, was on hand to see long-shot Oxbow's shocking win and heavy-favorite Orb's disappointing run. And the total handle for the day...

Tear it down. Fix it up. Keep it here. Move it there. Many at Pimlico Race Course Saturday, from celebrated trainers to $2 bettors, offered thoughts of what to do with Old Hilltop, the methuselan home of the 138th Preakness Stakes. The Maryland Jockey...

  9. Lukas secretly thought Oxbow was best hope for Preakness win

    D. Wayne Lukas may seem to the public an unlikely candidate to be one of the most hands-on trainers working in horse racing today. He shows up on television — like Saturday, when his horse Oxbow cruised to a win in the 138th Preakness — looking more like a grandfather enjoying an unbothered retirement in a place where the sun is barely hidden.

  17. Roaming the neighborhoods around Pimlico

Roaming the streets that encircle Pimlico Race Course, I discovered so many places that I had trouble going back to the same locale twice. Outer Northwest Baltimore is a fascinating, at times geographically bewildering, place.

  21. As Preakness 2013 arrives, infield shows identity shift from drink-a-thon to music festival

In 2008, Ed DeRosa witnessed the infamy of the Preakness infield — the passed-out partiers, the chucking of full beer cans into crowds and of course, the "Running of the Urinals," where drunken infielders ran down a row of portable toilets. DeRosa, a horse-racing reporter from Lexington, Ky., who attended Preakness from 2005 to 2011, says nothing could have prepared a first-timer for the debauchery.

Want a tip on this Saturday's Preakness? "In these big races, it's all about the horse that's peaking," J. William Boniface says, giving Orb's recent win in the Kentucky Derby as an example. He should know, because 30 years ago Boniface was training a...
