3. E85 ethanol: Let the buyer beware

Q: With my gas tank nearly empty, I mistakenly filled up with E85 ethanol recently at the Exxon station at 1825 Route 309 in South Whitehall. I did not know what this E85 was, nor that it could damage my engine. The pump had a yellow hose, and a white panel which read 'E85' in small characters, but no warnings or information despite plenty of room. All buttons to push for start of fuel flow were yellow. I picked up the yellow hose, pushed the 87 octane button, but couldn't get the gas to flow. Trying to solve the problem, I saw a slit of blue light blinking near the panel marked 'E85', thought I must have been pressing the wrong button, and hit the E85 button, successfully filling the tank. While paying, I asked the cashier about E85, and he said the fuel could wreck my engine! It cost $153 to have the fuel removed from my tank. Neither Exxon nor Lehigh Gas, which owns the station, would help me. At the very least, prominent information should be displayed warning that E85 is safe to use only in 'flex-fuel' cars designed for it.

  11. No-ethanol, 'all-American' gasoline available in Kutztown

Q: Regarding your search for 'pure' gasoline without ethanol, I've seen ads indicating that it's offered at the Amerigreen station on Main Street in Kutztown. According to the 'Gas Buddy' app on my smartphone, their regular is $3.999 per gallon [on April 19], a dime more than the Turkey Hill station just down the street. Not sure if that is the 'with ethanol' or 'without ethanol' version, as Amerigreen sells both.
