1. Columbia teacher named 'Mover and Shaker' in industry

As library media specialist at Longfellow Elementary School in Columbia, it's Matthew Winner's job to figure out how best to use technology in the classroom. It has become a place where students have a chance to do something they already may be doing at home: play on a Nintendo Wii.

  3. Columns are like first dates: Don't talk about the weather

I try to write these sports columns as though I were talking to a woman with whom I was out on a first date. That means, unless something crazy has just gone down, like a blizzard or a hurricane, do not talk about the weather, and try at all costs not...

  11. OUYA and the assault on the 'big three' of console gaming

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo should consider themselves “on notice.” Making a gaming console is not an act of magic or divine intervention. The old paradigm is about to be shaken up by OUYA (pronounced OOH-Yah), a free-spirited Android-powered console set to debut next year that will undercut the giants of console gaming in price and potentially shake things up in the area of content.

  13. Lights out, game over: Alternatives for the gamer without power

This past weekend, nature reminded us who is really in charge of this spherical rock. As heavy storms blasted the eastern seaboard, hundreds of thousands were left without power for days on end. As of this morning many still do not have command of their electricity. Inevitably, a lot of those folks are gamers.

  15. 'The Walking Dead' recap, episode 305: 'Say the Word'

The most disturbing occurrence of this week's episode of The Walking Dead had to be when Rick — still grieving the death of his estranged wife, Lori — finds the room of the prison where she recently gave birth to their baby via fatal C-section, crawls around on the floor running his hands through what appears to be the afterbirth and finds the zombie that presumably gorged on her corpse sitting against the wall with its belly bloated from the grisly feast, like it had just gorged on five Taco Bell Big Box Meals. Rick shoves his revolver into its mouth (it appears to have some of her hair still stuck to its face) and pulls the trigger, and then repeatedly stabs its swollen breadbasket containing her remains with his KA-BAR.

From Michael Cross-Barnet: Show of hands, please: How many of you progressive-minded parents out there think it’s OK to force a child to take music lessons against his or her will? I’m guessing not too many. Maybe 10 or 15 percent? OK, let&...

  23. Baltimore's Mobtown Moon reinterprets 'Dark Side of the Moon'

For decades, music fans have obsessed over Pink Floyd's 1973 masterpiece, "Dark Side of the Moon." It's used as an unofficial soundtrack for "The Wizard of Oz" and performed by countless cover bands. There's a reggae version and even an 8-bit version that would be at home on a Nintendo game.
