Melbourne-based Harris Corp. is the largest high-tech company headquartered in Central Florida. That¿s nearly half of its worldwide employment of 15,000, which includes operations in Ohio, New York and Washington, D.C. Harris is a diversified technology company. Military products include combat radios, fighter-jet cockpit communications and command-control systems for military planners. Harris¿ Rochester, N.Y.-based RF Communications Division is one of the military¿s top suppliers of high-tech radio systems. The company¿s Government Communications Systems Division, based in Palm Bay, produces communications systems for the nation¿s intelligence agencies and air traffic control centers. It won a $1.66 billion contract - its biggest-ever civilian contract ¿ in 1992 to provide air-traffic control systems to the Federal Aviation Administration. More recently, in 2006, the company landed a $600 million deal to make portable, handheld computers for the U.S. Census Bureau.
Harris is also a prominent player in the broadcast television equipment market. Its broadcast division, based in Cincinnati, builds a variety of TV equipment including high-definition signal transmitters and other digital video systems.
Today¿s Harris Corp. has its roots in two legacy companies ¿ Harris Intertype, a press equipment maker founded in Ohio in 1895, and Radiation Inc., an aerospace electronics company founded in Melbourne in the 1960s. Harris Intertype acquired Radiation in 1967 and the company became a conglomerate of electronics, printing presses, office equipment, communications and computer chip making.
