  1. Exports fuel Baltimore's, nation's economic growth

Today marks the second anniversary of President Barack Obama's National Export Initiative (NEI), an ambitious effort to double U.S. exports by the end of 2014 and support millions of American jobs. In 2011, U.S. goods and services exports reached a record $2.1 trillion and supported the growth of American businesses across the country. Moreover, our economy has added private sector jobs for 24 straight months.

  3. Natural gas exports eyed through Calvert County

    — It's quiet these days at Dominion's liquefied natural gas terminal in the Chesapeake Bay. Only five tankers docked last year at the pier a mile off the Calvert County shoreline, and not much traffic is expected this year, either.

  5. Orioles' presence at Cespedes' workout showcases expanded international efforts

Desperately lagging in the world baseball market, the Orioles are attempting to step up their international efforts, and this weekend might serve as a primary example of that change in philosophy.

  7. A level playing field for jobs

President Barack Obama is initiating an "Insourcing American Jobs" dialogue with top business leaders. The latter are always looking for tax breaks and special benefits, and this could quickly degenerate into pleas for special treatment — whereas creating the best overall environment for all private investment would best foster growth and jobs.

  9. China currency bill: America fights back

The China currency bill is the most significant jobs bill Congress could pass. It enjoys the bipartisan support of nearly 80 Republican and Democratic senators, yet President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner oppose it, illustrating that both...

  11. U.S. energy policy: What have we got against Canada?

It's been a rough month for Canada. America's biggest trading partner and overall non-jerk country just wants to sell some oil to its friends. Canada is sitting on a black-gold mine, but its oil sales are unable to keep pace with production -- a problem that will only increase as the nation further taps the Alberta oil sands and Arctic territory.

  13. NAFTA has failed Maryland and U.S.

When free trade proponents sold the American people on the idea of the North American Free Trade Agreement, they promised that it would be a boon economically. Evidence, however, suggests that it has been anything but. Since NAFTA's implementation,...

  15. South Korean trade deal: A small step toward fixing the economy

President Barack Obama's jobs bill, a relatively modest effort given the risks the economy faces and the toll that extended joblessness has taken on American workers, is bogged down in a divided Congress and is about to get more so. Senate leaders are moving to amend the plan to substitute a tax surcharge on millionaires for the provisions Mr. Obama had used to offset the bill's $447 billion cost. That's a perfectly sensible idea, given the massive tax benefits the rich have seen during the last decade, but it's even more dead on arrival in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives than Mr. Obama's initial plan, which relied on things like an end to tax breaks for oil companies and a smaller tax increase on families making more than $250,000 a year.

  17. Free trade is destroying the American economy

Your recent article ("Democrats press Obama on jobs tour" Aug 15) lists the people on President Obama's economic team who have come and gone: Larry Summers, Christina Romer, Paul Volker, Peter Orszag, Jared Bernstein and Austan Goolsbee. Only Ben Bernanke...

  19. Warren Buffett is wrong

The United States tax code is so backward that billionaire investor Warren Buffett pays only 17 percent in income taxes, a rate even lower than that of his secretary. Or so he claims. While I have great respect for Mr. Buffett, and while I agree that our tax code could benefit from major adjustments, Mr. Buffett's statement is misleading. And he knows it.

  23. Free trade does not kill jobs

Charles Campbell argues U.S. jobs are destroyed by free trade ("What's killing jobs?" Aug. 27). While some jobs are destroyed by free trade, overall the jury is in, and he is wrong. The United States was as trade-open in the Clinton years when we...
