1. Upper Chesapeake Chorus wins regional competition

The Upper Chesapeake Chorus, comprised of women mainly from Harford and Cecil counties, on Saturday, April 20, won the Region 19 competition of Sweet Adelines International, held in Ocean City. Led by director Rick Taylor, 42 local women won the competition's first place overall and first place mid-size chorus medals, earning the right to represent Region 19 (comprised of choruses from five states) at the international competition in Baltimore in fall 2014. This will be UCC's second time in the international competition. The chorus rehearses in Aberdeen on Monday evenings and is always looking for more women who would like to make friends and learn more about singing in the barbershop style. For more information, please visit http://www.uccsai.org and http://vimeo.com/jordanwolf/uccpromo or call 410-638-0777.

  3. A nuclear opportunity

Companies supplying components for the nuclear power industry are located throughout the United States, including a number in Maryland. These manufacturing firms have developed businesses providing components and equipment required for the maintenance and upkeep of the 104 operating reactors in the U.S. Unfortunately for them, the domestic market is expanding at a very low rate. Currently in the U.S., ground has been broken for five new reactors.

  7. Enough gun laws on books already

Like many of Gov. Martin O'Malley's constituents, I strongly urge him to withdraw any legislation to ban so-called "assault weapons" and "high capacity" magazines. He should stop any legislation that creates gun-free zones and not make laws that hurt law-abiding citizens and hinder commerce in this state. Paradoxically, gun control clears a path for violence and makes aggression more likely.

  11. Rachel Marsden: Is Putin the Russian Reagan?

It would seem that we're now at the stage of global economic lunacy where the worldwide socialist slide is so far gone that the president of Russia is lecturing the world, and particularly Europe, about the risks of socialism.

  17. Letter: Decision to reject liquor license 'smacks of protectionism'

The decision regarding the liquor license at the Wegmans store by the Howard County Alcoholic Beverage Hearing Board is absurd and infuriating ("No license for liquor store at Wegmans," Aug. 2.) The only purpose Maryland's liquor laws serve is...

  19. Obama, Romney miss the elephant in the room

The unemployment rate has been stuck above 8 percent for months. President Barack Obama continues to blame the moribund economy on President George W. Bush while claiming that he has created 4.5 million jobs. Republican challenger Mitt Romney announces that he will create 12 million jobs in his first term. The president has proven that he has no solutions for our sick economy, and Mr. Romney's promises are ludicrous.

  23. Obama should focus on trade, energy, deregulation

    America is in crisis.
