  1. On IRS and wasted stimulus dollars, the buck stops nowhere

President Harry S. Truman's famous adage — "The buck stops here" — sat on his desk in the Oval Office as a clear reminder that as president, he was responsible for the decisions he made and what happened in his administration. It sent a message that accountability would be an ethic of his presidency.

  3. Why the IRS scandal is worse than the others

    Happy Father's Day …
Happy Father's Day … In over two decades in politics, my least favorite political type was the unabashed "hot dog," that media-seeking missile who would happily sell his grandmother for a 30-second hit on the evening news. The most dangerous...

  5. Surveillance leaks show Obama's hypocrisy

The revelation that the federal government has spied on millions of supposedly private phone and Internet communications makes President Barack Obama's headache over the IRS targeting of conservative groups seeking tax exemptions seem like a passing migraine.

  7. Security vs. privacy

The latest open debate over security and privacy is a welcome pivot from the irksome father-knows-best attitude that has prevailed too long regarding the government's contention of superior judgment in the realm of national security.

  9. Lifestyles of the IRS and infamous

Every hardworking taxpayer should ponder this: The IRS is only one of over 1,300 agencies within the federal government ("IRS manager claims he started extra scrutiny," June 10). If the IRS could spend over $50 million on "conferences" between 2010 and 2012, is it a stretch to think that this type of waste is going on within hundreds other agencies?

  11. Regulators and consumer advocates focus on senior identity theft

Older consumers are no more vulnerable to identity theft than others, but they do tend to be victims of the types of ID theft that are on the rise — cases involving tax returns and medical care.

  13. Cummings calls for end to IRS probe

Arguing that the congressional investigation into the IRS should be concluded, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings said Sunday that closed-door interviews with the agency's staff show neither the White House nor officials in Washington had a hand in targeting conservative groups for added scrutiny.

  15. Rand Paul seeking plaintiffs, funds for suit against NSA

  17. The two Obamas

The contradictions at the heart of the Obama presidency are finally out in the open. As a result, a man who came into office hell-bent on restoring faith in government is on the verge of inspiring a libertarian revival.

  21. IRS failure starts with tax code

I must admit I don't feel terribly sorry for the tea party folks and their difficulties with the Internal Revenue Service ("New charges against the IRS," June 5). The problem isn't with the IRS, which may have been guilty of sloppy workmanship, but with the tax code that allows political action groups to call themselves "social welfare agencies" and hide their donor lists from public scrutiny.

  23. Fix Section 8 and landlords will step up

Recent letters to the editor have focused on the reality that people deserving of Section 8 assistance need more landlords to open up their homes and apartments to Section 8 so that the housing poor will more quickly and easily obtain the housing that they need.
