State Farm Florida is State Farm's subsidiary that handles property insurance policies in Florida. State Farm Florida's parent company is State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., based in Bloomington, Ill. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. is Florida's largest automobile insurer. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. is a mutual company, which means that its policyholders own the company. For years after Hurricane Andrew, State Farm did not sell new homeowner policies in South Florida. Recently, the company started selling new policies in South Florida, but on a very limited basis. While other insurance companies in Florida dropped hundreds of thousands of customers after the devastating 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons, State Farm Florida officials said they wanted to avoid dropping its customers' policies. That changed in the summer of 2007, when State Farm Florida announced it would not renew policies of 50,000 customers who lived within two miles of the Florida coast. Shortly following that announcement, the state subpoenaed State Farm Florida and its parent companies as part of an investigation into a possible conspiracy among insurers to keep property insurance prices high. The Office of Insurance Regulation also disagreed with the amount of savings State Farm Florida was passing onto its customers after the state allowed companies easier access to backup coverage from the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund. In October 2007, regulators settled their case with State Farm Florida. The company is continuing to cooperate with the state in its investigation into alleged collusion between insurers, insurance trade groups and insurance rating agencies.
