  3. No more Fukushimas

The earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan one year ago today precipitated the most serious nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. A worst-case scenario contemplated the voluntary evacuation of Tokyo, as the Japanese Atomic Energy Commission feared a meltdown of the spent fuel pools sitting atop the reactors more than of the reactors themselves, according to an aide to then-prime minister Naoto Kan. Spent fuel pools, unlike nuclear reactors, are enclosed in no primary containment building. The one atop Reactor 4, which also has the "hottest fuel," sits directly exposed to the elements after an explosion blew the roof off the building March 15.

  5. Wind energy is clean, but wind energy systems are not

Last year, Gov.Martin O'Malley proposed to build 500 megawatts of offshore wind. The debate centered around how much this would really cost, and the proposal died. This year, the proposal is to spend a fixed amount of money by capping the amount by which Maryland electric bills can increase. The state would be saying, essentially: Give us a billion dollars so we can build some offshore wind.

  7. Labor wants guaranteed role in wind-power plan

Organized labor wants a guaranteed role in the offshore wind project Gov. Martin O'Malley is expected to propose — and the unions want it in writing. The demand by construction unions is the latest hurdle for O'Malley's effort to spur the...

  15. Natural gas exports eyed through Calvert County

    — It's quiet these days at Dominion's liquefied natural gas terminal in the Chesapeake Bay. Only five tankers docked last year at the pier a mile off the Calvert County shoreline, and not much traffic is expected this year, either.

  17. A 'virtual power plant' in your home: conservation

I leave the water running while I do the dishes, drive a half-ton truck that gets 10 miles to the gallon and, in the energy hog display that my husband finds most annoying, I move from room to room without turning off lights behind me.
