  1. Test drive electric and hybrid cars at Green Day [Russett]

Happy Earth Day! Monday, April 22, we celebrate Earth Day. Did you know the first Earth Day was held April 22, 1970, and in the 1990s it went global? No matter how big or small, we can all make a difference, not just on Earth Day but everyday....

  3. A wind-win for Maryland and a beacon for the bay

After protesting at a nearby coal plant in 2008 and becoming discouraged with his own dependence on unsustainable energy, Charles County Commissioner Ken Robinson decided to build a wind generator on his coastal property and get off the grid. He became the first individual in Southern Maryland to build one on his land.

  5. House panel kills 'black liquor' bill

Legislation that would have phased out millions in ratepayer-financed subsidies for mostly out-of-state paper mills died in a House committee Friday, just a day after the Senate passed a companion measure.

  7. 'Black liquor' phase-out clears Senate

A phase-out of renewable energy subsidies for paper mills has cleared the Maryland Senate, though with a provision that guarantees the state's only paper plant in Allegany County would continue to receive payments underwritten by taxpayers.

  9. End this outrageous 'black liquor' subsidy

<a href="http://bio.tribune.com/TimWheeler">Tim Wheeler</a>'s most recent article about the fight over black liquor in Maryland's renewable energy standard ("'Black liquor' bill resurrected," March 25) highlights the overwhelming need to reform our state energy policy. Over the last seven years, Maryland ratepayers have spent millions of dollars &mdash; money that was supposed to encourage new clean energy like wind and solar &mdash; on polluting energy from old out-of-state paper mills. The mills receive this subsidy by burning "black liquor," a carbon-rich byproduct of the paper pulping process and other mill residues. The practice of burning these byproducts, for which they receive a subsidy, has been a standard industry practice since the 1930s.

  11. 'Black liquor' bill resurrected

Some Annapolis lawmakers have gotten in the Easter spirit a little early.  A bill that would curtail millions in renewable-energy subsidies for mostly out-of-state paper mills comes to the Senate floor Monday, after being killed last week and then revived...

  13. Easter a time to renew — and for renewable wind energy

Easter's message of hope and new life is a universal and much-needed one throughout the world, but particularly for Marylanders this year as we celebrate the passage of the offshore wind bill by the Maryland General Assembly.

  15. Wind picks up steam

Would you pay a little bit more on your monthly utility bill to help build a wind farm generating as much as 200 megawatts of electricity 12 miles or more off the coast of Maryland? That's really all Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposed offshore wind bill comes down to &mdash; and yet for the past two years the General Assembly has said no.

  17. Anti-fracking legislation is not premature

Commentator Harry Alford's claim that focusing on fracking legislation in Maryland constitutes a waste of time and effort suggests a shocking ignorance of what is happening in other states ("Anti-fracking legislation is premature," March 7). Maryland's proposed fracking bills are designed to create an orderly, safe process that states elsewhere have not achieved.

  19. 'Black liquor' deal goes sour

A deal environmentalists thought had been worked out to stop mostly out-of-state paper mills from cashing in on Maryland's renewable energy law by burning so-called "black liquor" has come unglued. The state's only paper plant in Allegany County has backtracked on a pledge not to oppose the move in return for being allowed to keep collecting from the state's utility customers for another five years.

  23. Old-fashioned meat market, cutting-edge power

Fifty-eight years after it opened in Highland, Boarman's Old-Fashioned Meat Market is still, in many respects, living up to its name. Boarman family members still mix spices for the pork sausage made in house, the staff butcher still stuffs the sausage...
