1. New Baltimore Community ToolBank lends tools to volunteers working on charitable projects

The first sign that this isn't an ordinary warehouse in southwest Baltimore is the bright blue murals of screwdrivers, wrenches and other tools painted on the exterior.

3. We need a war on lead poisoning

The reports that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cut its threshold for lead poisoning from 10 micrograms per deciliter to 5 micrograms were something of a simplification. What the CDC said, after years of study and discussion, was that no level of lead exposure for children is safe. The 5-microgram level was set somewhat arbitrarily as the point at which doctors and public health officials would recommend parents take action to reduce their children's risk, but there is ample evidence to show that levels of 3 or 4 micrograms — and perhaps even lower — are associated with learning and attention deficit disorders later in life.

5. The Black Keys, a rock band thriving in a world of pop

"Rock 'n' roll will never die," sang Neil Young in 1979. Lately, though, it seems to be in a coma.
"Rock 'n' roll will never die," sang Neil Young in 1979. Lately, though, it seems to be in a coma. How else to describe the sad state of rock? The Billboard charts are filled with pop acts, rappers and country singers. Even sugary boy-bands have re-...

7. Self-checkout at the supermarket: You call this progress?

If you've shopped at a supermarket the last few years, you've probably come across the self-checkout lanes. You know, the ones where you're expected to do all the work yourself -- scanning, keying in codes, and usually bagging -- without getting paid or receiving a discount on your grocery items.

11. Letter: Choose the right plants, and deer won't be much of a problem

I would like to remind Dr. Camay Woodall that there are deer resistant plants. Look it up, and I'm sure you will find some that you like. Your rant about the deer only shows that you have plants that they like — so you are contributing to the...

13. Frederick artist offers faux painting classes

With some paint and glazes, a few tools and a little time, a plain, functional front door can become a home's welcoming statement, with the rich colors and grains of oak or mahogany. A concrete column can look like marble, a ceiling can become a cloud-dappled sky and old cabinets can get new life.

15. Do I have a sixth sense, or does everyone know men are guilty of everything?

I got home around nine the other night and headed straight for the kitchen. Two hours of helping teach 15 kids karate had me craving hot food and hard liquor. I skipped the liquor and studied the frozen entrées we keep on hand for such occasions. My...
