  1. College Park should think bigger than Chick-fil-A

The waffle fry wars have hit College Park, with hundreds of people signing a petition to get the Chick-fil-A restaurant booted from the University of Maryland's Stamp Student Union over the company president's anti-gay marriage activism. A petition on the website change.org says "It is clear that Chick-fil-A does not represent the values embraced by the University of Maryland community. Allowing such an organization to continue to operate in the [student union] runs counter to the spirit of equality that the university claims to champion." It's heartening to see concern on campus for the issue of marriage equality, but an online petition urging the university to break its lease with a fast food restaurant isn't going to accomplish much. To make a difference, the students need to take much more direct action.

  7. Chick-fil-A stance recalls Westboro Baptist Church

Chick-fil-APresident and CEO Dan Cathy surely knew that his corporate opposition to same-sex marriage would spur controversy. He is more than justified in stating his position, given that his company will either reap the benefits or suffer the...

  9. Dear Chick-fil-A president…

Dan Cathy, president ofChick-fil-A, says we are shaking our fist at God by supported gay marriage ("Crowds flock to Chick-fil-A to back owner on marriage," Aug. 2). I would like to say this to Mr. Cathy: We now know that sexual orientation is not a...

  13. Mayor's Chick-fil-A position distorted

I must respectfully call out Cal Thomas and The Sun on Mr. Thomas' recent column onChick-fil-Athat appeared on the op-ed page ("Chick-fil-A gets busted by the thought police," Aug. 2). Boston Mayor Thomas Menino expressed his displeasure, and made his...

  15. Chick-fil-A controversy raises free speech issues

I believe The Sun, along with many other news outlets, misses the major issues regarding the Chick-fil-Astory: Why is there such intolerance for CEO Dan Cathy's personal views, and such disregard for his freedom of speech ("Chick-fil-A gets busted by...

  19. Maryland gay marriage: Don't cue the wedding bells just yet

There was a brief explosion of optimism from those supporting same-sex marriage in Maryland last week after a poll by Hart Research Associates indicated that voters in the state support it by a significant margin of 54-40. No state has ever approved gay marriage at the ballot box, but advocates here and elsewhere — The New York Times published a piece titled "Hopeful news from Maryland" — contend that the issue hasn't polled this well before either.

  21. Chick-fil-A president's stand on gay marriage has nothing to do with the quality of his company's products

Columnist Thomas Schaller is consistent if nothing else in his convoluted and irrational thinking about Dan Cathy's view that that God defined marriage and men should not try to redefine it ("Chick-fil-A head has a right to speak, not to be taken...

  23. For Chick-fil-A, freedom of expression works both ways

Regarding Charlotte Eliopoulos' letter, we all have the right to freedom of speech, even if that means protesting a business owner's beliefs. We also are free not to support his franchises ("Chick-fil-Acontroversy raises free speech issues," Aug. 7)....
