In the spirit of an irrepressible title character, the Laurel Mill Playhouse unveiled its Nov. 2 opening of "Auntie Mame" without a backward glance at Hurricane Sandy.

  5. Voting to give more money to millionaires

As I drove by the old Playhouse cinema on 25th Street in Baltimore the other day, I thought of the hapless fellow I encountered on the screen there in the 1970s — Nino, the lead character in "Bread and Chocolate," a comedy about a poor Italian waiter who tries to make a living among the affluent of Switzerland.

  7. The Republican case for same-sex marriage

Marylanders have an important decision to make this Election Day: whether or not to affirm their belief in the traditional American principle of equal rights for all, or instead to continue a system of special rights for some. A "yes" vote on Question 6 would sustain the Maryland legislature's recent historic vote that gave gay and lesbian couples to same right to marry as heterosexuals. A "no" vote would repeal marriage equality, perpetuating the unequal system of granting all the legal privileges and perks of marriage to heterosexual couples only.

  9. Cal Thomas: The Stossel solution

In order to get the correct answer to anything, one must ask the right question. That is what former ABC News and current Fox News TV host John Stossel does on his weekly program. If ever there was "must-see TV," this is it.

  11. Fatality raises concerns about police tactical raids

When members of Baltimore County's tactical unit burst into a Reisterstown home this summer, they were looking for potentially armed suspects in the attempted murder of a 15-year-old boy. But in the chaos of the raid, Officer Carlos Artson shot and killed the home's owner — who was not a suspect — after he thrust a large sword at the officer, police said.

  13. A trap for small businesses

Laws are like fine nets, catching the common fish even as the biggest push their way through. Or so you might think on learning of how federal prosecutors keep nabbing small and medium-size businesspeople who violate an obscure law relating to bank paperwork, even as the best-known violator of the law so far (a certain well-connected politico named Eliot Spitzer) walks free.

  15. Laws are sometimes inconvenient

Walter Olson of Washington's militant Cato Institute is correct in implying laws should never be designed to injure innocent people ("A small business trap," May 30). Yet, the absolving of anyone responsible for ignoring, regularly at least, a federal tax...

  17. Maryland Public Policy Institute again shows its myopia

Sean Kennedy of the ever-voluble Maryland Policy Institute attempts in "Annapolis dines at federal expense" (June 13) to indict two governments simultaneously. If ever anyone finds oneself on a side with government, do please watch-out; you may be under...

  19. Politicians in Annapolis gambling away the budget

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to bury the notion of Governing. It has been suffering the ravages of age for some time now, so it perhaps would not be surprised that people gather to bury rather than praise it. And yet the site of its...

  21. Norquist's 'beast' thrives

For the last 20 years, the charming Grover Norquist has been perhaps the most successful of American political entrepreneurs, having used a letterhead and small office to secure "no tax" pledges from a near-majority of Congress members and myriads of state legislators, and holding well-intended Wednesday meetings to spread the gospel. He would not be distressed to be credited with a Leninist capacity for political organization.

  23. Convert defense cuts into civilian benefits

Weapons-makers, ideologues and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta are busy whipping up fears in reaction to scheduled reductions in our bloated military budget. Don't be fooled. These cuts will not put our security at risk, though they will cut into profits and executive pay at certain defense-establishment corporations.
