The 111-year-old ham, as the story goes, is a 1902 cured ham that was rescued from one of the P.D. Gwaltney Jr. and Company packing houses.
The birthday party also will be the launch of the museum’s Pan Ham contest. Guests are encouraged to take a postcard showing a photo of P.D. Gwaltney Jr. and his ham on their summer travels and document a vacation moment with a photo of the image. Post the photo on the Facebook site — Isle of Wight County Museum and Historic Sites — or email it to us at firstname.lastname@example.org, and be eligible for prizes. The contest runs through Sept. 4.
Postcards of the image of Gwaltney and his ham are available in the museum gift shop or can be downloaded from the website, www.historicisleofwight.com.
