A woman was detained by Newport News park rangers and police Friday afternoon after she exhibited erratic behavior at the Newport News YMCA.

About 1:30 p.m., two guests of a wedding at Huntington Park’s Rose Garden flagged down two park rangers on routine patrol. They told the rangers the woman was tampering with vehicles in the parking lot during the wedding, Newport News spokeswoman Kim Lee said in an email. After the wedding guests approached the woman, she ran into the YMCA at 7827 Warwick Blvd., police said.

Inside, the rangers found the woman with a metal object in her hand, and she began making threats. The rangers told the woman several times to drop the object, and later, one of them used his Taser on the woman, Lee said.

Several Newport News police officers and an ambulance soon arrived. The park rangers and Newport News police put the woman in handcuffs and removed her from the YMCA building.

The woman was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation. No charges have been filed yet in connection to the incident, with officials trying to determine whether the woman damaged a vehicle in the parking lot, according to Lee.
